Before we start, here’s a link to the rental page: yellow-rental.com This isn’t advertising. It’s simply so you understand who’s speaking and that this isn’t a clickbait article - it’s real experience from someone who works with scooters and tourists every day.
Who I Am and Why I Speak Honestly
My name is Alexey. I’ve been running Yellow Rental in the Kathu area, right in the center of Phuket, for four years.
Yes, under Thai law I can’t perform physical technical work myself. But everything related to explaining how to ride, safety, choosing the right model, and giving advice - I always do personally.
We work as a single team: the technical part is handled by the guys, explanations and communication are on me. This format is the most comfortable and clear for everyone.
Over the years I’ve seen enough to speak directly, without exaggeration.
Why a Scooter Is Convenient but Requires Understanding
Phuket is an island of distances. Here:
- taxis are expensive
- buses are limited and rarely convenient
- beaches are far from each other
- the roads are winding
A scooter solves half your problems: you’re independent, mobile, and you save both money and time.
But a scooter is not a toy. On Phuket it’s:
- wet asphalt
- sand on the road
- steep hills
- active local drivers
- sudden tropical rain
This isn’t a reason to be afraid - it’s a reason to stay alert.
How to Choose a Scooter: Honest Recommendations
No “take the more expensive one”. I always recommend the model that matches your actual riding level.
If you’re a beginner:
Light, simple, reliable.
If you have riding experience:
Comfortable, stable, universal.
Heavy models for confident riders:
If your experience is limited - I’ll say so directly, but the choice is always yours. My job is to warn you, your job is to decide.
Licenses, Fines, and Accidents: Clearly and Honestly
The most common question: Do you need an international motorcycle license (Category A)?
Short answer:
Yes, by law you do. But most tourists ride without it.
What actually happens:
- without Category A you can receive a fine for not having a motorcycle license
- police typically don’t create problems beyond that
- in case of an accident, everything depends on who is at fault
This is crucial.
If you are NOT at fault - the at-fault driver pays. Even if you don’t have Category A. This happens in real life.
But riding without the proper license:
- can complicate the accident process
- gives police a clear reason to fine you
- may influence how the insurance company handles the case
We offer optional third-party liability insurance, but:
- it costs extra
- it only works if you have an international motorcycle license Category A
This is the honest truth.
How the Rental Process Works With Us
1. Choosing a model
We show the scooters, explain differences, and I personally help choose what suits you.
2. Photo and video recording before rental
We record the scooter ourselves, and I always tell every client: take your own photos and videos in any rental, whether with us or elsewhere. This is your protection.
3. Inspection
We explain existing scratches, show the condition, turn on lights, check brakes.
4. Contract
Simple and clear. If something is unclear - I explain personally.
5. Deposit
Our deposit system is transparent and straightforward. We accept:
- a passport
- a financial deposit in baht
- rubles
- dollars
- euros
- cryptocurrency (at current rate)
You choose what’s more convenient for you. Some prefer leaving a passport, others prefer a deposit.
For me the most important thing is that the process is comfortable and clear.
Scooter Delivery: Not a Luxury - an Intelligent Decision
People often think delivery is “for lazy tourists”. In reality it’s one of the safest ways to start riding.
Why delivery is the smart choice:
- you don’t have to ride unfamiliar roads right after a long flight
- no navigating in the dark or at dusk
- no walking to the rental shop through chaotic traffic
- I immediately explain how to ride, brake, and what to watch out for on Phuket
- you start riding calmly and gradually, without stress
Delivery on arrival day is the best option. You receive the scooter, understand how it works, ride around the hotel - and everything is safe and smooth.
Delivery is about logic and safety, not luxury.
The Most Common Mistake Tourists Make
It’s not lack of experience or high speed. The most common mistake is overestimating your condition after a long flight.
People think: “I’ll be fine, I’ll ride a bit”. But after 8-12 hours of travel, your brain works in slow motion.
That’s why on the day you arrive:
- get delivery
- ride only near your hotel
- don’t go far on the first day
This isn’t a limitation - it’s safety.
Mini-Checklist for Checking a Scooter Before Riding
Before the ride:
- tires
- brakes
- lights/indicators
- mirrors
For the first few days:
- don’t overtake locals
- keep distance
- slow down in rain
- avoid unfamiliar areas at night
Absolutely no:
- alcohol or drugs
- flip-flops
- “decorative” helmets
- attempts to “ride like locals”
Final Honest Advice from Me
I’m not trying to be the biggest rental on Phuket. I’m trying to be the most honest.
I want you to:
- make an informed decision
- understand the risks
- ride calmly
- respect the road
- return the scooter in one piece
- and go back home healthy
If afterwards you message me: “Alexey, everything’s good, the scooter is like new, thanks for the advice”, that is the best result for me.
Everything else is just rental.
